“A Short Escape to Pakistan’s Mountain Paradise – Experience the Majesty of Hunza in Just One Weekend.”
The Week-End in Gilgit-Hunza tour is a perfect short getaway for travellers seeking a blend of breathtaking mountain scenery, rich cultural heritage, and authentic local experiences. Despite its brief duration, the journey offers an immersive introduction to the legendary Hunza Valley, often called Pakistan’s own Shangri-La.
The adventure begins with a spectacular flight from Islamabad to Gilgit, offering unforgettable aerial views of Nanga Parbat, Rakaposhi, and several towering peaks of the Karakoram. Travellers then journey along the world-famous Karakoram Highway, passing through dramatic valleys and stopping at the Rakaposhi View Point to admire one of the longest uninterrupted mountain flanks on Earth.
The tour showcases the cultural treasures of Hunza through visits to the centuries-old Baltit and Altit Forts, both beautifully restored and rich in history. Guests also have the opportunity to experience traditional Hunza hospitality, taste local cuisine, and explore vibrant bazaars and handicraft workshops operated by local communities.
The excursion to Upper Hunza further reveals the region’s extraordinary beauty, including the turquoise Attabad Lake, the historic village of Gulmit, and the iconic Passu Peaks. The combination of pristine landscapes, traditional villages, and warm local hospitality makes this short journey an unforgettable experience.
Ideal for families, couples, photographers, and international visitors with limited time, this tour perfectly captures the essence of Gilgit-Baltistan’s natural beauty and cultural richness in just three memorable days.
Catch the early morning flight to Gilgit. From the air one has breathtaking views of massive Nanga Parbat (the world’s 9th highest peak) Rakaposhi Peak and Kanjut Sar. On arrival at Gilgit, begin a scenic drive northwards towards Hunza on the Karakorum Highway, pausing at Rakaposhi view point for a cup of tea. The view of this North face of Rakaposhi allows one to view the longest un-interrupted mountain flank on earth (6000m), starting from the river bank. Continue the drive to Karimabad and check in to the comfortable hotel. In the afternoon visit the 800 year old Baltit Fort, once the stronghold of the Ayasho Dynasty, and today a wonderfully restored museum that has won many awards, including ones from UNESCO and British Airways. Continue on to visit the neighbouring ‘twin’ village of Altit. Here we will visit the restored Altit Fort and the women’s work shop where they make wooden furniture and handicrafts. Enjoy the garden and heavenly orchard annexed to the restored Altit Fort and try the local Hunza cuisine at the Altit Café, cooked by a women’s community village organization. Return to the hotel and explore the local tourist market, including ‘Café De Hunza’. Overnight at the hotel.
Today wake up at dawn in order to have a breath-taking view of sun rise over the lofty peaks of Hunza. After returning to the hotel for breakfast, drive to Gulmit, in Upper Hunza, along the banks of the newly formed Attabad Lake, a significant addition to the natural beauty of Hunza. The road link has been recently restored by a 7.9 km long tunnel system. Gulmit formerly served as winter capital of the Hunza Kingdom. Here one will walk through the village and see local women weaving carpets and making several other traditional handicrafts. After lunch, drive to Passu Village. Enjoy fabulous views of Tupupdan Sar, Passu Peaks, Shispare and Boyohagur, all exceeding 7000 meters. Enjoy some refreshment at the local hotel aptly named the Caravan Sarai, before returning to Gilgit for overnight. Time permitting, visit the bazaar and other sites. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your weather permitting flight back to Islamabad.
